Yoga Akasha :: Your space in the heart of the community

Nicholas Harris

‘The great joy for me in yoga is simply in giving my body space and time, for a moment letting it off from the many tasks which life gives us and simply staying with it in the present moment with no agenda, no 'task' other than to listen and to wait. I almost always feel silly when I do this. What if nothing happens? What if all that I am left with is silence and nothingness? Invariably though something does happen. Quietly after a while, my body comes to trust me. It is almost as if it has its own intelligence as it tentatively asks me if we could stretch out and lengthen the lower back or play a while with the hips. I trained with 'The Inner Yoga Trust' which is accredited with the British Wheel of Yoga. I practise and teach at a very basic level sensing the bones and muscles, feeling with delight the changing rhythm of the breath’. - Nicholas

Inner Yoga Trust - After studying intensively with BKS Iyengar in India, Jenny Beeken founded the Inner Yoga School in 1992. It became a charitable trust in 1996. Over the years, we have been guided also by the teaching of Victor Van Kooten and Angela Farmer and by the approaches of Vanda Scaravelli and her students. During this time we have come to two deep intuitions. The first is that our natural state is one of innocence, creativity and ease.   Of course we don't always feel like this and life can leave us feeling tense, congested and in a state of unease.  Our second intuition though is that our bodies have the intelligence to find their way back to that state of ease.  In this context the yoga postures are like signposts which can guide the body as it explores and softens around its tensions and 'holdings', whilst also feeling after its inner vitality.  Combining this with meditation and breathing, we can find our way home to the wonder of our own being.
